Reader's card:
Books may be borrowed upon presentation of a valid reader’s card/student card for the current academic year.
Please come personally to the circulation desk to update or change your personal information.
Staff cards also serve as reader’s cards, and must be updated annually.
Readers are responsible for the items that have been borrowed on their reader's card and for returning the items on time. It is the readers' responsibility to check the due dates for the borrowed items and return them by those dates.
Notices for items that have been ordered or need to be returned will be sent by e-mail.

Renewal exceptions
Books will not be automatically renewed under the following circumstances:
- The item has been requested by another reader.
- The item is non-renewable (laptops, electronic dictionaries, 1-day reserve books, reference books, journals)
- The reader’s card date is expired.
When an item you have borrowed is recalled, you will receive an email with a notice to return the item by the new due date.
A Hebrew University e-mail address granted by the student's administration is the main patron contact address for the library.
Requests
-
A book that is on loan may be requested and will be keep for the patron that had placed a request once it has been returned to the library.
- Patrons with borrowing privileges may request items checked out by another patron. You will be notified by email when the requested item is available to be picked up.
- Books can be requested via the library's catalog.
- A book that has arrived must be picked up at the circulation desk within 7 days (3 days for reserve books).
Fines
- The reader is responsible for returning items on time.
- A reader who returns requested books late, will be charged 10 NIS per day, including Fridays, Saturdays and holidays.
- Books that were specially ordered, and were returned late, will be treated the same as requested books.

Recurring late returns or unpaid fines will be treated as follows:
- The reader's card will be blocked.
- The reader will not receive any service from the faculty's secretariat.
E-reserves
Some of the articles on the course reading list have been scanned to e-reserves and are accessible only to students in the relevant course.
Periodicals
Bound periodicals may be loaned for several hours during the day for photocopying.
Duplicate copies (mostly in Hebrew) may be loaned for a week.
Rare books collection
A special collection of rare books is kept in the Circulation Department. They may be viewed in the library during library hours.
Harman Science Library
Loans are possible for Hebrew University academic staff and students using their Hebrew University ID card. A reader card is automatically opened for all Hebrew University users.
It is the reader's responsibility to maintain an awareness regarding their loaned item’s status.
Their reader’s card - which contains all of this information - can be found online via the library’s online catalogue or using the HUJI app. Any change or update of personal details requires the presence of the reader at the circulation desk.
Loans are also possible for an external user. In such a case, the user will be given a library card to be used for physical loans and may check their item’s status through their online reader’s card.
If your library card is lost, inform the circulation department immediately. In the case of Hebrew University user, a new card must be ordered through the Student Accounts Division.

Extensions
Books with a loan period of three days or a week will be automatically extended, for the duration of the year from the date they were loaned. The loan will not be extended in the following cases:
- Another reader has ordered the book
- The reader’s card is no longer valid
- The reader has outstanding debts to the library
There is no automatic extension for laptops and electronic equipment.
The reader will be notified through their university e-mail of the due dates for items that can no longer be extended.
Orders
A book can be ordered only if all of its copies are on loan. Orders are made by the reader through the catalog. If there is a problem, please contact the circulation desk.
Once the ordered book is returned arrives, the person who made the order will be notified through their university e-mail and can pick up the book at the library.
Textbooks are held for the reader at the reference desk for three days, and research books are held for a week.
The library is authorized to cancel a reader’s order if necessary.
Returns
Readers are responsible for the books they have on loan, and must check their due dates in their reader’s card.
A reader holding books which they no longer need is required to return these to the library.
The library is authorized to demand the return of a book before its original due date if necessary.
A reader declaring the loss of an item, or who returns a damaged book, will pay the cost of that book as well as a 30 ILS processing fee. Alternatively, the reader can purchase an identical and undamaged copy instead of the one lost.
While the library is open, books are to be returned to the Harman Science Library circulation desk. When the library is closed, they should be dropped through the slot next to the library door.
Fines
A reader who returns a book after its due date will be required to pay a fine.
Fine calculation:
Books from the general collection: 10 ILS for every day of delay in the return of an ordered book, including Fridays and Saturdays, vacations, holidays, and other days for which the library is closed with prior notice.
Reserved books: 3 ILS for every hour of delay, or 30 ILS for every day of delay.
Books that were loaned by special authorization and returned late will be treated like ordered books.
The library authority can change the fines at any time.
In cases of repeated delays, delays which harm other readers, or when fines are not paid:
- The reader’s card will be blocked.
- The reader will not be given any service.
- In the administration of the relevant faculty, their personal information page will be blocked, and they will not be able to take exams.

Books are loaned on the basis of presentation of an up-to-date reader’s card. A student card serves the purpose.
Readers are responsible for checking the status of their loans.
Updating or changing personal information requires the reader’s presence at the Circulation Desk.
If a reader’s card is lost, the Circulation Department should be notified immediately and a new reader’s card ordered through the university’s Student Tuition Department.

Books that have been borrowed for up to 3 days or up to 7 days will normally be extended automatically for up to one year.
Circumstances under which the loan period will not be extended:
- Another reader requests it
- The reader’s card is no longer valid
- The reader owes money to the library
The reader will be notified by email if the book cannot be extended beyond a certain date.
Book Requests
Books may be requested only if all copies of the book are listed in the catalog as having been borrowed. The reader must order a copy through the catalog. If, for some reason, the book cannot be ordered through the catalog, the request should be referred to the Circulation Desk.
When the requested book has returned to the library, an email notice will be sent to the reader who requested it.
Textbooks will wait for pickup at the circulation desk for 3 days while light reading books will stay here for 7 days. After that they will be returned to the shelves.
Book Returns
- Readers are responsible for the books they borrow, including keeping up-to-date on when it must be returned, through the reader’s card.
- Readers who hold books they no longer need are requested to return them to the library.
- The library is entitled to demand the return of a needed book even before its listed return date.
- A reader who declares that the borrowed item has been lost or returns it damaged will pay its cost plus NIS30 handling cost. The reader is entitled to acquire an identical and undamaged copy and present it to the library instead.
- During library hours, books must be returned to the circulation desk of the library from where it was borrowed.
- When the library is closed, books may be dropped into the return box at the entrance to the library.
Fines
Late book returns will be fined, as follows:
- Books from the general collection that were specially requested – NIS 10 for every day that a book is returned late, including Fridays, Shabbats, holidays, and days that the university is closed according to schedule.
- Reserve books – NIS 3 for every hour of delay, or NIS 30 for each day a book is returned late.
- Books that were borrowed by special permission, and were returned late, will be treated the same as books that were specially requested.
The Library Authority is entitled to update the schedule of fines, as it sees fit.
Recurring late returns, late returns which harm other students, or unpaid fines will be treated as follows:
- The reader's card will be blocked
- Service will be refused to the reader
- The reader's personal data sheet in the university will be blocked, and he or she will not be allowed to participate in exams.

Readers are responsible for checking the status of their loans.
Each reader is held responsible for library material charged out on his/her card.
Please refrain from transferring your card to another reader.
The university e-mail address assigned to you (yourname@mail.huji.ac.il) serves as the sole address to which the Library Authority will send messages.
Renewal of Book Loans
Books that have been borrowed for up to 3 days or up to 7 days will normally be renewed automatically daily, up to one year.
Circumstances under which the loan period will not be extended:
- Another reader requests it
- The reader’s card is no longer valid or current
- The reader owes money to the library
- Loan period exceeds one year
The reader will be notified to their HUJI email account if the book loan cannot be renewed beyond a certain date.
Book Requests
Books may be requested, only if all copies of the book are listed in the HUfind catalog as having been borrowed. The reader must order a copy through the catalog. If, for some reason, the book cannot be ordered through the catalog, the request should be referred to the Circulation Desk.

Reader's cards

Student cards serve as reader's cards and are issued by the Student Tuition Office.
- New students receive their card in the mail.
- Returning students receive in the mail a sticker update for their existing student card.
- The library Circulation Department should be notified if the student card is lost and a new card should be ordered from the Student Tuition Office.
- Students' contact information is automatically downloaded from the university's students administration. Updating or changing personal information can be done through the Student information site.
- University employee cards also serve as reader's cards.

Loan Period
The loan period for each book is recorded in the HUfind catalog. If questions arise, the library’s records are the determining factor.

Borrowing from other academic libraries in Israel
Faculty and graduate students are eligible to receive a guarantee letter to other academic libraries in Israel. This guarantee will allow you to receive library services according to the policies of that library. To receive a guarantee letter please contact the circulation department.
Archaeology Library
Books are lent on the basis of presentation of an up-to-date reader’s card. A student card serves the purpose.
Readers are responsible for checking their reader’s card as to whether their book loans are still valid.
Updating or changing personal information requires the reader’s presence at the Circulation Desk.
If a reader’s card is lost, the Circulation Department should be notified immediately and a new reader’s card ordered through the university’s Student Tuition Department.

Lending Policy
Books may be borrowed for up to 3 days, with automatic extension each day by one day, unless another reader requests it.
Books that may NOT be borrowed from the library:
- Books from the Assyriology collection
- Reference books
- Archeological excavation reports
- Term papers
- Rare books
- Journals

Extension of Book Loans
Books that have been borrowed for up to 3 days will be extended automatically.
Circumstances under which the loan period will not be extended:
- Another reader requests it

The reader’s card is no longer valid
- The reader will be notified by email if the book cannot be extended beyond a certain date
Book Requests
Books may be requested, only if all copies of the book are listed in the catalog as having been borrowed. The reader must order a copy through the catalog. If, for some reason, the book cannot be ordered through the catalog, the request should be referred to the Circulation Desk.
When the requested book has returned to the library, an email notice will be sent to the reader who requested it.
Book Returns
- Readers are responsible for the books they borrow, including keeping up-to-date on when it must be returned, through the reader’s card.
- Readers who hold books they no longer need are requested to return them to the library.
- The library is entitled to demand the return of a needed book even before its listed return date.
- Books must be returned to the circulation desk only during library opening hours.
Recurring late returns, late returns which harm other students will be treated as follows:
- The reader's card will be blocked
- Service will be refused to the reader
